How is it calculated?
What is the ADR 1000-point rule?
Under ADR 1.1.3.6, for packaged dangerous goods the quantity × transport-category factor is summed: category 1 ×50, category 2 ×3, category 3 ×1, category 4 ×0. If the total does not exceed 1,000 (single category: 20 / 333 / 1,000 kg or L), no orange plates, ADR driver certificate or instructions in writing are required. Example: 60 L petrol (×3) + 200 L diesel (×1) + 20 L paint (×3) = 440 points → exempt.
Where do I find the transport category?
It is in column 15 of ADR Table A, and most Safety Data Sheets give it in section 14 as “Transport category (tunnel code): 2 (D/E)”. The calculator derives the category automatically from the UN number, class and packing group using the ADR 2025 1.1.3.6.3 rules; you can override it with the SDS value.
What is still required under the exemption?
The transport document (stating the total quantity per category), one 2 kg ABC fire extinguisher, UN-approved packaging with marks and labels, staff awareness training, the no-smoking and no-opening rules, and the loading and stowage rules (including mixed-loading bans) still apply.
Why may goods allowed on one truck not share a container?
ADR mixed-loading bans mainly concern Class 1; paint (3) and an oxidizer (5.1), for example, may travel on the same truck. At sea the IMDG 7.2.4 segregation table applies: 3 and 5.1 are “separated from” (2), so they may not share a container. Goods that only need “away from” (1) may share a container only with competent authority approval (7.3.4.1).
Do limited quantities count towards the points?
No. Limited quantity (3.4) and excepted quantity (3.5) packages are not counted under 1.1.3.6. However, on a vehicle above 12 t maximum mass carrying more than 8 t gross of LQ, LQ marks are required front and rear (3.4.13), and LQ packages may not be loaded with Class 1 (except 1.4).
How are lithium batteries and aerosols counted?
Lithium ion / metal batteries (UN 3480, 3481, 3090, 3091) are category 2: on their own exempt up to 333 kg gross. Flammable aerosols (UN 1950, 5F) are category 2, non-flammable ones (5A) category 3. The quick-pick list holds 45 frequently shipped goods with ADR 2025 Table A values.
